Pilgrim accommodation tents at Mina near Makkah

Pack light, pack right. This checklist covers documents, Ihram, clothing, medicines and the small items that make a two-week pilgrimage far easier.

Documents (Hand Carry Only)

Passport with visa, vaccination certificate, CNIC, hotel and flight vouchers, passport photographs, travel insurance card, and photocopies of everything kept separately from the originals.

Ihram and Clothing

Men: two sets of Ihram sheets, an Ihram belt with a zip pocket, and seamless sandals. Women: loose abayas, comfortable non-heeled shoes, and prayer scarves. Everyone: enough underclothes for the trip, since laundry is expensive near the Haram.

Health and Personal Care

Prescription medicines with the doctor's note, painkillers, ORS sachets, blister plasters, vaseline, unscented soap and shampoo (scented items are forbidden in Ihram), sunblock for after Ihram, and a small first-aid kit.

Useful Extras

A foldable prayer mat, a small bag for shoes at the Haram, a Zamzam-safe water bottle, a universal adapter (Saudi uses type G), a power bank, an unlocked phone for a local SIM, and a pouch for cash worn under clothing.

Leave at Home

Perfumed toiletries during Ihram, large bottles of liquid, cooking items, drones, and anything valuable you would be devastated to lose in a crowd.
